The CDC has issued a few guidelines that aim to protect the lives of senior citizens living in retirement homes. However, these guidelines may have negative effects too. These effects can affect the long-term health of our parents living in these retirement homes. Two of these guidelines caught our attentions. The first one being that the CDC is asking all retirement homes cancel all public or non-essential group activities and events. Before COVID19, seniors were already isolated. Now with these guidelines, the administrators are restricting old folks from the little daily joys that kept them entertained like playing cards, bridge, bingo or chess with other seniors. But that’s not it!
The CDC is also asking senior facilities to limit the number of non-essential visitors to only one per day. Having a lot of visitors was never a complaint that seniors ever had. Now with these rules they will be even more lonely.
With all these draconian guidelines the CDC is not giving any practical tips to seniors except to say “Wash your hands.” So families whose parents health are deteriorating not because of COVID19 but because of isolation have to make a decision: To leave or not to leave their parents in the retirement home? Its not an easy decision to answer because it is costly to move your parents to their own apartment. There is a reason why they were in that retirement in the first place.
